DEL MONTE, Monterey County — October 30, 2026. The former Hotel Del Monte is among the Monterey Peninsula’s most important surviving landmarks. But visitors who discover its photographs online should know that the historic building is now Herrmann Hall at the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS), inside a secure Navy installation. A historical designation, a hotel reservation page or a virtual museum feature does not mean that anyone may enter the grounds for an unscheduled walk.
Can the general public visit the historic hotel?
On its official visitor information page, NPS explains that the campus is a secure Naval facility and limits entry to appropriate students, faculty, staff and authorized visitors. The school’s gate-access instructions say that visitors seeking access must have a sponsor arrange screening in advance. Some programs require requests at least three business days ahead, and gate schedules are subject to change because of security requirements. A picture ID is required; visitors should use current instructions from their sponsoring NPS department.
Consequently, travelers should not interpret the phrase “historic Hotel Del Monte” as a promise of unrestricted day tours. Even when the university’s Welcome and Historic Center or a private event is described online, eligibility, opening hours and access procedures must be confirmed with the university first.
What remains of the hotel?
The NPS Dudley Knox Library’s Historic Hotel Del Monte collection traces the resort to railroad entrepreneur Charles Crocker and describes its landscaped grounds, the early origins of the 17-Mile Drive excursion and distinguished visitors. The original Hotel Del Monte opened in 1880. The Navy later acquired the property, and the Naval Postgraduate School established its campus in Monterey in 1951. Herrmann Hall remains a prominent administrative and historic building.
These details are documented history, not evidence that a public attraction is operating every weekend in 2026. The old hotel’s grounds are part of a contemporary military education institution with working offices, lodging and security infrastructure.
What about reservations at Hotel Del Monte?
Naval Support Activity Monterey maintains guest lodging information for the Hotel Del Monte at 1 University Circle. That lodging is part of the Navy’s hospitality program and is not equivalent to an ordinary unrestricted downtown hotel. Travelers should establish their eligibility and confirm entry arrangements before paying, booking transport or arriving at the gate.
How can people learn the history without entering?
Start with the NPS Library online historical archive, including historic maps, photographs and short videos, or visit public museums elsewhere in Monterey under their own admission rules. Another NPS campus history resource explains the property’s transition through wartime Navy use and postwar graduate education.
For Del Monte residents, the practical distinction is simple: neighborhood streets, privately managed shopping destinations and the secure NPS campus are separate jurisdictions. Direct an access request to the actual operator rather than assuming a nearby street or neighborhood entrance is public.
