DEL MONTE, Monterey — October 30, 2026. The wooden walkways around Del Monte Beach are more than a scenic way to reach the sand. They are also a long-running neighborhood infrastructure concern. Documents presented to the City of Monterey’s Neighborhood and Community Improvement Program (NCIP) Committee on January 21, 2026 show several separate proposals for repairing or extending beach boardwalks, plus a broader city review of money tied up in older unfinished projects.

Four separate boardwalk-related projects appear in city documents

The NCIP committee’s January 21 agenda packet identifies four separate projects at Del Monte Beach. They should not be combined into one construction contract or described as completed work:

  • NIP2302 — Boardwalk Repair: a project with approximately $43,771 listed as an available balance, focused on damaged and missing boards and the route near Beach and Tide. The January committee list marked it in progress.
  • NCP2434 — Beach Way Boardwalk Extension: a separate project with approximately $125,000 listed in the committee ranking materials, describing a proposed extension toward the firmer sand.
  • NCP2436 — Tide Avenue Boardwalk Replacement: another $125,000 project in the list, concerning repair or replacement of wooden walking surfaces along Tide Avenue.
  • NCP2527 — Boardwalk Lighting: a distinct $20,000 proposed installation of lights along Tide Avenue’s beach boardwalk, which may require additional coastal review.

The dollar figures reflect the January 2026 committee’s list of available project balances. They are not newly approved spending for October, final construction bids, or a promise that every improvement has already been built.

Why were the projects being reexamined?

According to the committee’s staff report, the city faced a structural budget problem and directed a review of older NCIP projects that had not begun or were inactive. Staff presented ways to rank some projects for possible reallocation of money toward general city operating needs. The report said the overall potential reallocation target was $3 million to $4 million across the city.

It would be inaccurate to say all Del Monte Beach improvements were defunded merely because they appeared in a ranking packet. At least the boardwalk-repair item was marked in progress, while other entries were being reviewed; definitive funding changes require subsequent council actions and updated city project records.

How residents can check what actually happened

The city’s official agenda archive contains NCIP committee and City Council meetings, including the October 21 and 28 committee sessions. Residents can search project numbers NIP2302, NCP2434, NCP2436 and NCP2527 when requesting current status from Monterey Public Works. The city’s public records search offers another starting point for meeting documents and official actions.

People walking near Del Monte Beach should use designated accessible routes and obey temporary barricades even if construction projects are incomplete. A project listing does not guarantee safe walking surfaces on every boardwalk on the day of a visit.

Why this belongs in the local newspaper

Del Monte Beach residents are affected by pedestrian access, public lighting, erosion, shoreline conservation and the city’s capital budget. Those are practical neighborhood questions distinct from the historic Hotel Del Monte and from the retail center bearing the same Del Monte name.
